As Vice Chairperson of the Kallang Youth Club at Kallang Community Club, Aik Chin Chong, a National University of Singapore (NUS) student, is a strong advocate of giving back to the community. He takes part in community events and regularly visits homes for the elderly. But about his own future, Chin Chong was less decided…until he received the Woh Hup Bursary.
The Woh Hup Bursary, established by one of Singapore’s leading construction and civil engineering companies, Woh Hup (Pte) Ltd, is awarded to NUS undergraduate students studying Building and/or Civil Engineering who need financial assistance.
Chin Chong’s life changed after receiving the Bursary. Straight after his exams in the first semester of his Third Year, the Civil Engineering Major embarked on an internship with Woh Hup. There, he was assigned the role of Assistant Engineer on one of Woh Hup’s biggest building projects, D’Leedon.
“It was a great eye opener as I was involved in the daily proceedings of the construction progress and I learnt what it takes for a construction project to function,” he says.
Of course, the Bursary did more than give Chin Chong the opportunity to gain hands-on work experience. The youngest son in a family of four, Chin Chong explains that the Woh Hup Bursary has helped to lessen his parents’ financial worries. Now in the second semester of his Third Year, Chin Chong has been able to stretch the use of this gift even further.
“Thanks to the Bursary, I am able to make the most of the opportunities that come my way while I am on exchange at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology,” he says.
Chin Chong’s life is on track now. No more indecision – he is determined to be a Civil Engineer and, hopefully, one day give back to students like him at NUS.
