Honours year student Shawn Lim Shun Fa strongly believes in Helen Keller’s words, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” He received the CSC Bursary in his Third Year, which enabled him to experience University life to the max.
The CSC Bursary was set up with a generous gift from the Computer Science Corporation, a leading global information technology (IT) services company.
Before he started receiving the Bursary, University was not so much an adventure, but a struggle for Shawn.
He says, “I was giving primary and secondary students tuition, and working part-time at a local microbrewery restaurant. My multiple commitments left me little time for my academics, much less the co-curricular activities that I yearned to take up. I felt left out of the community and didn’t have many friends to approach when I had any problems. School was dreadful and my results suffered. It was a terrible period. I hope no other student has to go through that just to fund their education.”
With his days of financial insecurity behind him, the Communications and Media Major’s school life is buzzing with activities. Shawn is now able to take part in hall activities such as the Raffles Hall Musical Production, its Social Committee and more. He is also the National University of Singapore Student Union’s (NUSSU) IT and Multimedia Director and is on the committees of other NUSSU events. What’s more, Shawn’s grades have improved.
Shawn says, “Words of thanks alone can’t express the gratitude I feel towards the benefactors. The Bursary has not only impacted me, but also made life easier for everyone around me. I believe the best way to show my appreciation will be to be the best I can be at University. This has only been possible because of the Bursary.”
