Dr Sunlin Chou has spent most of his life since secondary school in the United States. Yet, his heart remains close to home. Recently, he and his wife made a gift to the National University of Singapore (NUS) to establish the K. R. Chou PhD Scholarship in Economics in the memory of his late father, Dr Chou Kai Ren. Dr Chou Kai Ren was an Economics lecturer during the early 1960s at NUS’ predecessor institution, the University of Malaya, and he later served as Professor and Head of the Department of Economics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at Nanyang University.
The K. R. Chou PhD Scholarship in Economics will support the most promising students during their first year of study. The Scholarship will be awarded concurrently with a University Research Scholarship, enabling support for the recipients’ entire duration of study.
“Apart from my father’s connection to NUS, I decided to make a gift to the University as I have pleasant memories of the years I spent in Singapore before leaving to attend university in the United States. Also, the limited financial support I was able to obtain as an undergraduate student in the US made me realise the need to make financial aid more available to students,” says Dr Chou, who graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr Chou’s father, Dr Chou Kai Ren, was an economist who chose to forsake his business pursuits to answer a higher calling – to teach. He obtained an advanced degree and became an educator, believing that it was a better way to serve society.
“My father was impressed with the excellence of many of the students he taught, and felt energised by his interactions with them. I believe that the Scholarships will expand access to education, which is key to the advancement of individuals and society,” Dr Chou says.
“I hope that recipients will use this Scholarship to enhance their learning experiences, and in future, help others to obtain similar benefits, by being teachers or supporters of educational institutions and students,” he adds.
