TAHIR STUDENT EXCHANGE AWARD (2009)
Indonesian magnate and philanthropist Dato Sri Dr Tahir started from humble beginnings. The son of a Surabaya clothing-shop owner, he started the Mayapada Group as a garment and textile manufacturing business. Today, it is one of Indonesia’s largest conglomerates. Dr Tahir is a firm believer in education. By supporting this Student Exchange Award, he hopes the good relations and understanding between the people of Indonesia and Singapore may be enhanced.
Each Award supports financially disadvantaged Indonesian students at the NUS Business School going on exchange, needy undergraduates at the School going on student exchange at partner universities in Indonesia, or financially needy Indonesian undergraduates from partner universities who are on student exchange at the School.
TAN MINGWEI GLOBAL COMMUNITY SERVICE GRANT (2010)
The late Ms Tan Mingwei was a medical student at Cambridge University, UK. She spent several of her holidays serving on volunteer trips to Botswana, Nepal and Taiwan, and was inspired by the experiences she had. Ms Tan also actively volunteered at home in Singapore, where she taught handicapped archers. Sadly, she passed away in an accident at the young age of 20.
In her memory and to promote the spirit of volunteerism, the Tan Mingwei Global Community Service Grant was set up for students who undertake meaningful community work in developing countries and hopefully be inspired by the work just as she was.
