Both were descendants of a poor Chinese scholar who immigrated to Malaya in the early 19th century. That the family rose through five generations was due as much to education as it was to hard work and thrift. After Mr Ong Sek Pek’s death from pancreatic cancer in 2009, the Foundation was renamed Ong Hin Tiang & Ong Sek Pek Foundation and continues the family’s philanthropic efforts to give back to the community where possible.
The Ong Hin Tiang PhD Scholarship in Cancer Research was created by the Foundation as a gift to NUS Medicine to support PhD students specialising in cancer research.
