Visitors to the Bukit Batok Home for the Aged may bump into NUS nursing student Tan Mei Hong. Mei Hong’s heart goes out to people in need, so when she isn’t honing her nursing skills at the NUS Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, this Year 2 student is engaged in community service. “I have always been passionate about working with needy people, which is why I chose to study nursing,” says Mei Hong. “As a nurse, you are there for people when they need you the most.”
But Mei Hong has needs of her own, too. And fittingly enough, she is receiving some help herself, thanks to the Thio Kok Foe & Choo Kim Beng Nursing Scholarship set up at NUS by Dr Della Lee of the DS Lee Foundation in the memory of her parents.
“Receiving this Scholarship boosted my self-confidence and spurred me to work harder. But it is also a huge help financially,” says Mei Hong.
“My parents are elderly and my mother is supporting the family. This Scholarship helps me pay for my tuition fees and books and I don’t have to add to my mother’s burden. Once I graduate, my mother will retire and I will support my family. This is why I’m also saving a part of the Scholarship money to repay my tuition loans. This will ease my financial stress in future. It’ll be one less thing to worry about.”
Mei Hong is looking forward to the day when she can join the work force. “Nursing,” she says, “brings you in contact with all kinds of people. I can use my skills and knowledge as a nurse to help patients. This will be my way of giving back to society for what I have received.”
