Over hills and through mountain valleys on grassland, dirt track and dry riverbeds, a team from the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Tembusu GlobeTrekkers, trekked 200km, in the recent 4 Desert Gobi March 2013 race. Their aim: to raise funds for needy Singaporean students.
Among them was Kent Ridge Undergraduate scholar, Lim Yan Rui, a Second Year Faculty of Science student, who says, “The Scholarship has not only lightened my parents’ financial burden, it has given me the opportunity to be independent and instilled a sense of confidence in me.”
Yan Rui is a resident at University Town’s (UTown) Tembusu College. Students are encouraged to engage in social and community issues. The College hosts the very popular Tembusu Forums which bring together undergraduates and distinguished academics and diplomats to discuss current, and often contentious, national, regional and global issues. Guests have included His Excellency, Yoichi Suzuki, Japanese Ambassador to Singapore and His Excellency David Adelman,United States Ambassador to Singapore.
Tembusu College Master, Professor Gregory Clancey, says, “I’ve been proud and pleasantly surprised that so many Tembusu students have come forward to volunteer and give back to the community. Community outreach is one of our most popular extra-curricular activities, and one that we highly encourage and give resources to.”
Yan Rui says, “Choosing to stay at Tembusu has been one of the best decisions I have made. I enjoy the many aspects of residential college life – these may be unique academic modules, exciting ad-hoc workshops and diverse interest groups to remarkable weekly tea sessions, community service opportunities and Tembusu forums.”
