They guard our campus and keep the roads safe. But did you know that the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Office of Campus Security (OCS) supports students by giving? In fact, OCS has one of the highest participation rates in NUS’ Annual Giving campaign, a yearly appeal to alumni, staff, students, faculty and friends of NUS to raise funds for student support.
“I am glad that my officers have heeded the call to give. I encourage them to give whatever amount they are comfortable with. Every gift is a good gesture and it is alright to start off small,” says Mr Seah Thian Pau, Director of OCS.
“I tell my staff that the amount a person gives may be small, but collectively, the amount becomes large,” he adds.
Mr Seah, who is an ex-police officer with more than 30 years of experience, feels that being given the option to decide what causes to support is a good way to encourage people to give. He says, “You can choose to give to a general fund or to something more specific like scholarships and bursaries. I think this should be the way.”
So what inspires Mr Seah personally, to give? He attributes his spirit of giving to his simple desire to share the extra that he has with the less fortunate. “It is good to give whenever you can. Whether monthly or once off, this encourages the habit of giving.
“There are many charitable organisations that one can give to. However I feel that since we are part of the NUS community, we should start with NUS,” he adds.
