In March 2005, NUS received a landmark gift of S$29 million in cash and shares from the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation. The gift enabled key initiatives to elevate the quality of education and research in NUS, including the establishment of four Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professorships endowed at S$2.5 million each.
The four Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professorships are amongst the most prestigious professorships of the University established with private funds. They are bestowed upon academics who have demonstrated an exceptional level of achievement in their field of study, as well as made significant contributions to the academic policies and programmes of their university. It is open to local and foreign academics who choose to work at NUS.
Of the four Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professorships, one resides with Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, one with the Faculty of Engineering and one with the Faculty of Science. The remaining Professorship is open to any field of study in the University's 10 faculties and schools, depending on the requirements of the University.
The Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professors will lead in opening up diverse opportunities for intellectual and professional growth, and be in the forefront of intellectual inquiry. The Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professors will initiate and co-lead education and research programs with faculty as well as initiate partnerships and collaborations with industry.
The incumbents are expected to give at least one public lecture within each term of their appointment, to contribute substantially to teaching, and to provide leadership to the research and entrepreneurial activities of the department.
