The Saw Swee Hock Centennial Professorship in Medical Sciences was established in August 2004, in honour of Prof Saw Swee Hock who has shown tremendous generosity, both in terms of service and monetary gifts to NUS.

Prof Saw, a recipient of the NUS Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 2005 and University Award for Outstanding Service in 2007, gave S$2.6 million to establish NUS’ first Centennial Chair. He has devoted most of his illustrious career to NUS and continues to serve the University as a member of the NUS Board of Trustees, while pursuing research at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.

The endowed Centennial Professorship is designed to attract world-renowned professors in any medical specialisation to join the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at NUS for periods of up to two years.

Professor of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School

Period of appointment: 28 April 2008 to 27 April 2010

Key activities:

  • Serves as Director of the new NUS Cancer Research Centre of Excellence.
  • Leads the Cancer Stem Cells Programme which focuses on cancers of particular importance to Singaporeans. His team studies the role of transcription factors and related genes involved in self-renewal of normal and cancer stem cells.
