In June 2003, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) made a generous gift of S$8 million to NUS to establish two MPA Professorships:
(1) MPA Professorship in Shipping Economics at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Economics
(2) MPA Professorship in Maritime Law at the Faculty of Law
The MPA Professorship in Shipping Economics helps to support the Department’s efforts to equip firms in the sector and professionals in Singapore with the necessary knowledge and skills in the complex and demanding areas of Shipping and Port Economics, by bringing in eminent professors and distinguished visitors to conduct courses and seminars, workshops and conferences.
The income generated from this MPA Shipping Economics Fund is used to attract two types of visitors:
(a) MPA Visiting Professor in Shipping Economics
The Professor’s main responsibility is to conduct at least one, but possibly two modules in Shipping Economics for postgraduate and undergraduate students, as well as conduct in-house seminars and public lectures in Shipping and Port Economics for maritime professionals in Singapore. Each visit is about three to four months.
(b) MPA Distinguished Visitor in Shipping Economics
The Distinguished Visitor is expected to conduct non-credit courses and participate in specialist workshops/conferences in Shipping Economics. Each visit is up to a month.
Besides teaching, the Visiting Professor and Distinguished Visitor may also be involved in the planning of relevant course syllabi, and advise on research and development efforts in their specialized fields.
