Lloyd’s Register, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and NUS collaborated to set up two Professorships at NUS, worth a total of S$9 million. The Memoranda of Understanding to set up the two Professorships, namely the Lloyd’s Register Professorship and the MPA Maritime Technology Professorship (MTP), were signed at NUS on 16 December 2005.
Under the MOUs, Lloyd’s Register and MPA each commits S$3 million to the Lloyd’s Register Professorship and MTP respectively. The Lloyd’s Register’s contribution attracts a dollar-for-dollar government matching grant.
The Lloyd’s Register Professorship, together with MTP, aims to further boost the growth of maritime research and development (R&D) in Singapore, in particular, offshore research. The establishment of the two Professorships is also an important tripartite collaboration between industry, government agency and tertiary institution, and a significant step forward in the efforts to create a dynamic maritime R&D cluster in Singapore. It was the first time that Lloyd’s Register, a diverse international company, committed funds to set up a professorship outside of the UK, demonstrating Lloyd’s Register’s determination to promote maritime R&D and its confidence in the Singapore Government’s commitment to develop Singapore as a premier centre for maritime R&D.
The Lloyd’s Register Professorship is established at the Centre for Offshore Research & Engineering (CORE), which is jointly set up by NUS and the Economic Development Board (EDB). The income generated from this professorship fund supports offshore research and engineering and maritime R&D, through the appointment of prominent visiting professors or world-renowned industry experts with widespread technical networks as R&D project leaders or advisors. They will work with CORE to identify and develop new R&D projects, and participate in the offshore and maritime R&D programs.
