The Khoo Oon Teik Professorship in Nephrology was launched in July 1999 with a gift of S$1.5 million from the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). The professorship was established to honour Dr Khoo Oon Teik, a nephrologist and the founding President of NKF. It recognises the sterling contributions made by Dr Khoo, an NUS alumnus, to the development of nephrology and medicine in Singapore, the National Kidney Foundation programmes and the University.
The income generated from this professorship fund is used to engage one world-class expert to spend a period of time in Singapore to advise and assist local doctors and researchers. It is also another step in NKF’s search for better treatment and prevention strategies for chronic kidney failure and serves as an extension of the current NKF programme in teaching and public education.
The Professorship also aims to expand clinical and laboratory research initiatives aimed at contributing new knowledge in the areas of kidney disease causation and identifying risk factors for the development of kidney disease. Another major goal involves designing and implementing a community-based programme that will serve as a model for primary prevention strategies to meet the challenges of the impending epidemic fo kidney disease in Singapore and worldwide.
