The Keppel Professorship in Ocean, Offshore and Marine Technology was launched on 19 September 2002 by His Excellency, President S.R. Nathan of Singapore and Chancellor of NUS. This professorship was established with a S$1.5 million gift from Keppel Corporation Limited and it marks the first step in NUS’ plan to help shape the development of Singapore into a centre for offshore research and engineering.

The income generated from this non-endowed professorship fund is used to engage eminent professors who bring a global perspective to promote R&D in Singapore, with a focus on teaching and long-term research in Offshore and Marine Engineering, and a particular emphasis on the technological interests of Keppel O&M. The professors will serve as "the beacon of guidance and inspiration for academics as well as industry".
