Jolyn Foo, a member of the NUS Cross Country team, has participated in many races. But RunNUS, a race organised by students, which raises funds for bursaries, has a special place in her heart. Jolyn, Project Director of RunNUS 2011, says, “RunNUS is more than a race. It is a coming-together of the NUS community. You feel a real sense of belonging and camaraderie when you run alongside other members of the University. And the fact that you are running to raise funds for student bursaries makes it even more meaningful.”
Jolyn, who is pursuing a concurrent degree in Bachelor of Business Administration and Masters in Public Policy, is working with her colleagues on the organising committee to heighten awareness of RunNUS’ fundraising element. She says, “We do not want anyone who is worthy of being a part of the NUS community to be left out due to financial drawbacks, which makes student bursaries a truly worthy cause.”
All RunNUS’ participants’ fees go towards Annual Giving, which raises funds for student support. RunNUS 2010 contributed $29,259 towards student bursaries. RunNUS 2011 is hoping to raise the bar considerably and provide more financial assistance to students in need.
Talking about the race experience, Jolyn says, “RunNUS offers a first-class running route and a charged-up atmosphere. Plus, you have a carnival, on-stage mini competitions and the appearance of NUS’ mascot for photo sessions. It will be great for all who are a part of NUS to come together, regardless of age, and re-live memories of the NUS Kent Ridge campus and Kent Ridge park. And you don’t have to be a seasoned runner to participate. You can either compete in the 10km race or the 5km fun run/walk. Either way, you enjoy yourself and help students. ”
RunNUS 2011 will take place on 21 August. Flag-off time is 7.15am. Registration closes 7 August. For information and to register, visit runnus.com.sg.
