DAVID TANG POH KHENG BURSARY (2013)
As a successful entrepreneur with his own firm in China, Mr David Tang devoted funds, time and energy to diverse charitable causes. While abroad, he provided financial aid to needy students at a number of universities in China, while simultaneously raising funds for Thong Chai Medical Institution, a traditional-medicine clinic in Singapore that is supported by charitable gifts. Today, Mr Tang continues to organise charity golf tournaments, assist with the TV production of the Thye Hua Kwan fundraising Charity Show and serves on the board of Care Corner Counselling Centre.
In line with his giving spirit, Mr Tang made a gift to support this Bursary, which is awarded to needy undergraduate students at the University.
DEREK HEWETT BURSARY (2009)
Mr Derek Hewett first came to Singapore from the United Kingdom in 1952. He served at Chartered Bank in Singapore and other parts of Asia until his retirement. In researching his ancestry, Mr Hewett unearthed a long line of ancestors whose loyal service helped establish many schools. He was inspired to follow suit. In 2010, he set up the Derek Hewett Foundation 2009 to use his estate to provide for needy undergraduates.
The Derek Hewett Bursary, supported by the Derek Hewett Foundation, is awarded to financially disadvantaged undergraduates.
DR LEE AH LOA MEMORIAL BURSARY (1990)
Though he spent much of his life many miles away from Singapore, Class of ’48 dental alumnus Dr Lee Ah Loa kept close ties to the University community. Dr and Mrs Lee were generous benefactors in their lifetime, giving to various arts and nature causes.
After Dr Lee passed away at the age of 61 in 1981, Mrs Lee made a gift towards a memorial fund established in his name. The Dr Lee Ah Loa Memorial Bursary supports needy undergraduate students at the Faculty of Dentistry.
DRE ENDOWED BURSARY (2009)
The NUS Department of Real Estate (DRE) has set up an endowed bursary fund as a faculty-level bursary. Additional funds for the Bursary were raised during the Building and Estate Management Alumni (BEMA) Fund Raising Golf Tournament held in August 2012.
This Bursary is open to financially needy full-time undergraduate students from DRE who are Singapore Citizens. The following sub-named awards were established:
DRE – ASCENDAS-SINGBRIDGE BURSARY

DRE – LIM SIEW BEE BURSARY
Madam Lim Siew Bee inspires her seven children by espousing the importance of education and giving back to the community. This Bursary was established in her honour by NUS with support from her daughter, Ms Chong Siak Ching.
DSO NATIONAL LABORATORIES BURSARY (2012)
DSO National Laboratories is firmly committed to engaging Singaporean youths and nurturing their interests in science and technology. This commitment is rooted in the belief that every Singaporean child should have access to education, a powerful enabler.
The DSO Bursary embodies this spirit. It is awarded to incoming and current Singaporean undergraduates reading the Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) or (Computer Engineering) degree. The Bursary is tenable for the academic year it is awarded.
DUNEARN ROAD HOSTELS/SHEARES HALL ALUMNI BURSARY (2009)
Dunearn Road Hostels (DRH) opened in 1952 following the merger of King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College. The Hall was renamed Sheares Hall (SH) in 1982 when it was re-located to the Kent Ridge Campus. In October 2009, a group of passionate DRH/SH alumni mooted the idea of establishing the DRH/SH Alumni Endowment Fund to help financially needy undergraduate students from the hall.
The DRH/SH Alumni Bursary is supported by this Fund. It is awarded to financially disadvantaged hostel residents. The following sub-named awards were established:
DRH/SH ALUMNI – ADVISORS IN-SYNC BURSARY
Advisors in-Sync is a company founded by Mr Stuart Shee Yew Kuen – an alumnus of Sheares Hall (SH) who has served as a Non-Resident Fellow of the Hall since 1 August 2010. Mr Shee has given generously of his time and financial resources to support activities at the Hall.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – BETTY GOH BURSARY
Ms Betty Goh has given 46 years of dedicated and loyal service to Dunearn Road Hostels (DRH) and Sheares Hall (SH). In 2012, Dunearnites and Shearites made a collective gift in appreciation of Ms Goh’s. This idea was first mooted by SH alumna Ms Khalijah Masud and received overwhelming support from the alumni.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – BORNEO STUDENTS ASSOCIATION BURSARY FUND
This award is named in honour of the Borneo Students Association (BSA) – an organisation which supported tertiary students from Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei. From 1973 to 1975, all activities of the Association were organised from DRH as the Presidents of BSA Singapore were Dunearnites.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – CHARITY GOLF 2012 BURSARY
In 2012, the DRH and SH alumni decided to organize a charity golf event to raise support for this endowment fund as part of the DRH 60th and SH 30th celebrations. This award commemorates the fundraising efforts of the golf event.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – CHIA YEW KAY BURSARY
BinjaiTree Foundation made a generous gift to the support the DRH/SH Alumni Bursary Fund. This gift was made in honour of Mr Chia Yew Kay, father of the Founder of the BinjaiTree Foundation.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – CHIOU FUN SIN AND LEE JAN BURSARY
Mr Chiou Fun Sin (Engineering, ’77) and Mrs Chiou Lee Jan (Law, ’81) first met in DRH in 1977 when Fun Sin had just graduated and Lee Jan was in her first year. Having benefited for their stay in DRH, they were among the pioneer donors who supported the endowment fund when it was set up in 2009.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – DRH BLOCK 18/19 BURSARY
DRH Block 18/19 (12 Dunearnites per block) was one of the closest and most active block in DRH. Its alumni gave to this award to commemorate their friendship and to help future generations of students.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – DUNEARNITES BURSARY
A group of Dunearnites who stayed in DRH in the 1970s and 1980s have come together to make a gift to help future Shearites have the opportunity to enjoy the friendships that they themselves had experienced during their stay at the Hall.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – DUNEARNITES @ KL BURSARY
In the 1960s to the 1980s, many Malaysian residents were staying at DRH. They returned to Malaysia following their graduation. Dunearnites who now live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, have come together to make a gift to help future Shearites. Preference for this award is given to students from Malaysia.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – LAWRENCE CHIA BURSARY
Associate Professor Lawrence Chia served as the Master of DRH, which later became SH, for 33 years and 3 months. As a tribute to his immense contributions, DRH/SH alumni gave generously to support this award. This idea was first mooted by SH alumna, Ms Khalijah Masud.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – LEW KIM SOON BURSARY
Mr Lew Kim Soon (Engineering, ’82) was a resident at DRH and later SH from 1978 to 1982. Following a successful career in venture manufacturing, Mr Lew became actively involved in charity. He funded the construction of a home for the disabled and aged in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and is a pioneer donor of the DRH/SH Alumni Bursary Fund.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – LOKE GIM TAY BURSARY
Mr Loke Gim Tay (SDE, ’83) stayed in DRH from 1979 – 1981. Having benefited from his stay in DRH and having crafted out a successful business career, Mr Loke was happy to donate to the endowment fund to help future generations of students.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – MRS JENNY CHIA BURSARY
Associate Professor Lawrence Chia served as the Hall Master of DRH from 1970 to 2003, for a total of 33 years. Prof Chia and his family made a gift to support a sub- name Bursary in honour of his mother, Mrs Jenny Chia.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – NG PENG KEONG BURSARY
Dr Ng Cher Siang is an alumnus of DRH and has been a Non-Resident Fellow of Sheares Hall since 1 January 2005. He is a strong and consistent supporter of the Hall’s activities. He donated generously to this sub-named Bursary in honour of his father, Mr Ng Peng Keong.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – NGAI KOK LEONG & CHONG CHIET PING BURSARY
Mr and Mrs Ngai Kok Leong gave to help one financially needy students stay at SH each year. Despite not being alumni of the Hall themselves, Mr & Mrs Ngai gave generously at the invitation of their friends who are Dunearites and Shearites.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – NTUC FAIRPRICE FOUNDATION BURSARY
NTUC Fairprice Foundation is a strong supporter of education. In honour of the Foundation’s gift to the DRH/SH Alumni Bursary Fund, the Hall established this sub-named Bursary.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – ONG SWEE LIAN AND LEE YAN KEAN BURSARY
Madam Ong Swee Lian stayed at DRH in the late 1960s to the early 1970s. Having enjoyed her time there, she made a gift to help financially needy residents of the Hall. This sub-named Bursary is named in honour of Madam Ong and her husband, Mr Lee Yan Kean.

DRH/SH ALUMNI – SCRC BURSARY
Under the leadership of the former Master of SH, Associate Professor Gary Tan, the SCRC decided to collectively donated towards a sub-name Bursary for financially needy students residing at the Hall.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – SEAH & SIAK BURSARY
Cheng San and his wife, Siak Ching, a NUS Board of Trustee (BOT) and Yale-NUS board member have been active contributors to NUS. Both of them have been awarded the NUS Distinguished Alumni Service Award for their contribution to NUS and the wider community. The Bursary is named “Seah & Siak”; the name they are known as during their stay in DRH.

A group of pioneer Shearites made a collective donation to support financially needy students at the Hall. Their gift was also a reflection of their enjoyable and beneficial experience as residents of the Hall.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – SUE YAP AND ALEX THIAN BURSARY
Madam Sue Yap (Science, ’84) and Mr Alex Thian (Law, ’85) met at SH when they were both students. The couple made a gift to commemorate their stay at the Hall and to help financially needy students.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – SUSIE HO-LIM CHWEE CHOON BURSARY FUND
The late Mrs Susie Ho-Lim Chwee Choon was passionate about supporting the education of those in need. She passed on in February 2012. When the Hall was fundraising in conjunction with its 30th (SH) and 60th (DRH) Anniversary, the family made a gift to honour their happy memories of Susie who had been instrumental in keeping the family together.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – WONG FOO KWONG AND LOH SOO LAN BURSARY
This award is named in honour of the parents of a Dunearnite. An immigrant, Mr Wong Foo Wong served as a Headmaster in Mersing, Johor. He helped many less fortunate relatives and students access education by paying from his own meagre pay. Madam Loh Soo Lan supported her husband and was the most loving mom and friend one can get! The donor is happy that they can continue in their footsteps.

Mr Patrick Ong is an alumnus of DRH and has been a strong supporter of student activities in the hall throughout the years. For instance, he has generously donated high-value prizes for hall events, such as the dinner and dance, every year without fail. He was one of the first donors to support this bursary fund.

The donors of this award stayed in Sheares Hall in the 1980s. Having benefited from their stay, they made a gift to help future generation of Sheares Hall residents.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – YC LOO BURSARY
Mr YC Loo (Engineering, ’80), came to study in NUS from Malacca, Malaysia, and stayed in SH in the late 1970s. Mr Loo has donated generously to the endowment fund every year since it was established in 2009. He gives to commemorate the good times he has had in DRH.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – YP KONG BURSARY
This Bursary is supported by a gift from Mdm YP Kong and Mr Yeo Keng Joon who met on campus and enjoyed their hall life very much. They stayed all their three years on campus and credit the hall experience for giving them an all-rounded exposure. They would like to help needy students in SH benefit from hall life as much as they did.
DRH/SH ALUMNI – QUANTEDGE FOUNDATION BURSARY
The Quantedge Foundation (Singapore) Ltd was established in 2015 to deliver impactful solutions to social challenges in Singapore. The Foundation made a gift to this Bursary to encourage students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to strive for success in life and to give back to society when they are able to.
