“My father recognised the value of education and naturally chose to give to a cause he believed in,” Mr Khoo Hock Tin says of his late father Mr Khoo Teck Quee.
In memory of the late philanthropist, Mr Khoo made a gift to establish the Khoo Teck Quee Bursary fund to help financially needy undergraduates enrolled in any full-time course at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Bursaries like this can help many students struggling to cope with tuition fees and living expenses, enabling them to reap the full benefits of the university experience and have access to different opportunities.
Mr Khoo is a regular contributor to education in Singapore. It is important to him to follow in his late father’s footsteps, and do his part in transforming the next generation through education.
Chong Yun Long, a recipient of the Khoo Teck Quee Bursary, is very grateful. While studying, he has been giving home tuition to primary and secondary school students to cover his daily expenses and supplement daily household spending.
“I am grateful for Mr Khoo’s support for NUS students like myself. He has helped to lighten the financial load on my family, allowing me to focus on my studies”
The Computer Science major has already secured a job with the Defence Science Organisation and is looking forward to starting his career upon graduation.
“The Bursary has allowed me to achieve my education and career goals. I had the chance to take part in various internships as well as an overseas programme. Studying at NUS has allowed me to learn from some of the best in the world.”
Mr Khoo hopes the Bursary recipients will help others when the time comes. “I want to pass on the tradition of giving, especially amongst the Bursary recipients. I would like to see them give back to help others just as they have received.”
