Every day, hundreds of students throng the National University of Singapore (NUS) libraries to tap on the vast collection of information. When they need help, the NUS librarians and library staff are happy to be of service. Over the years NUS Libraries have received various awards for their excellent service. Their Service Promise states that they will “serve with passion and a smile” and the librarians and library staff take this promise beyond the libraries.
Every year at their E-Resource Discovery Day, NUS Libraries hold a second-hand book sale to raise funds to support students facing financial hardship. In 2011, the committee added a Garage Sale to their event. The four librarians on the team -Herman Felani, Georgiana Glass, Umarani Jayapal and Chew Shu Wen- worked with library staff from all seven libraries in NUS. That year, their sales collection surprised them.
Assistant Librarian Georgiana Glass enthuses, “I remember getting very excited while we were counting the money. We could not believe how much we had raised!”
They donated their proceeds – S$11,000 – to the NUS Bursary as a gift from the various donors who had supported the event. The Bursary supports undergraduates in financial difficulty. Donations to the NUS Bursary are eligible for a 1:1 government matching grant, which in effect will double their gift.
“Students are our biggest clients so it made perfect sense to help them,” says Herman.
NUS Libraries hope to make giving to the NUS Bursary a tradition.
Assistant Librarian Uma says, “I believe that everyone pursuing an education should have a fair chance and not be hampered by a lack of finances.”
In September this year, the Librarians hope to top what they raised last year, and provide even more support for students who need it.
