For many, the life of Steve Appleton, late Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Micron Technology, Inc., represented the spirit of the semiconductor industry – he is remembered as an individual who lived life to the fullest, energised by innovation, competition and excellence.
To honour Mr Appleton’s life and contributions, Micron Technology, Inc., through the Micron Foundation, has made a gift to the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) University Town (UTown) to establish the Steve Appleton-Micron Scholarship. The Scholarship will support Third and Fourth Year electrical, computer, mechanical and chemical engineering undergraduate students specialising in semiconductor manufacturing, design or any related areas at UTown. The first Scholarship is slated to be awarded in AY2013/2014, with up to two recipients each Academic Year.
Micron Technology, Inc. is one of the world’s leading providers of advanced semiconductor solutions and systems. The Micron Foundation, established in 1999 by Mr Appleton, seeks to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics education through support to educators, students and communities worldwide.
Speaking about their decision to set up the Steve Appleton-Micron Scholarship at NUS UTown, a spokesperson for Micron said, “Steve’s philanthropic efforts were both substantial and far-reaching. He gave time and money to worthy causes in the communities Micron serves, and was an ardent believer that education was the foundation of strong communities, businesses and society as a whole. We want to be involved in moulding the future generation of scientists, engineers and innovators through quality education and research. Our partnership with NUS allows us to be part of the vision to groom this generation by connecting with educators to jointly develop programmes and initiatives that are relevant and exciting.”
Professor Tan Tai Yong, NUS Vice Provost (Student Life), said, “Micron’s generosity over the years has enabled many opportunities for our promising Engineering students. We are proud to set up the Steve Appleton-Micron Scholarship here in UTown.”
Micron has previously established the Micron Engineering Awards and the Micron Scholarship at NUS.
NUS UTown is Singapore’s first residential college programme aimed at producing creative thinkers and leaders.
