Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd, a leading Asia-focused real estate development, investment and capital management company, has made a gift to the National University of Singapore (NUS) to establish a bursary for deserving students.
Through an endowed gift of S$500,000, the Mapletree Bursary will support up to 10 bursaries every year, beginning in Academic Year 2013/2014. Recipients requiring financial assistance will be selected from across the entire University.
A key objective of Mapletree’s corporate giving programme is to empower individuals and enable the economically disadvantaged to access equal opportunities. The Group has been directing its philanthropic support to the less privileged in communities in Asia, focusing mainly in the areas of education and healthcare. Each Mapletree Bursary will help cover a significant proportion of a student’s tuition fees and living expenses. The Bursaries will not be restricted to students from any course of study, but will be based purely on financial need, to help bolster the future of each student and their family.
Thanking Mapletree, Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, NUS President, said, “The opportunity to pursue a university education is often a significant one and a means to a better life ahead for students and their families. Singaporean undergraduates are increasingly availing themselves of the financial aid available in the form of bursaries and student loans. For Singaporean students from families of below average income, student loan repayments upon graduation can significantly impede their ability to improve the financial situation of their families. Mapletree’s support and generosity will go a long way in making significant difference to the lives and futures of many of our bright young students.”
