You may have passed by her in the corridors of the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, walking along with her face buried in a Jodi Picoult or Paulo Coelho. She looks absorbed in the pages but Year 2 student Sarah Joseph has had a lot on her mind – until recently, that is. Coming from a single-parent family, Sarah was constantly juggling school work with tutoring and worrying about her finances – until she received the FASS Student Advancement Bursary.
Sarah says, “I believed that all I could do was study and work. But now, thanks to the Bursary, I am making the most of my University experience. I’m doing things that I wanted to do but never thought I would be able to because of financial and time constraints.”
Sarah, who is majoring in Psychology, is doing an internship with the Police Psychological Services Department. The would-be Clinical Psychologist is also hoping to go to the University of Toronto on an exchange programme. “They have a well-known Psychology programme,” she enthuses. And she’s gearing up for an Overseas Community Internship Programme in Vietnam. “I’m really enjoying my time at NUS.”
The Bursary has also eased the tension at home. “I used to feel so bad to ask my mother for money as she is struggling to look after my brother and me. Thankfully, I am now independent and able to look after myself.”
To donors of the FASS Student Advancement Bursary Fund, who include NUS alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends, Sarah says a heartfelt, “Thank you”, adding, “If you are in a position to help, please do so and I can assure you that we recipients are truly appreciative of your help.”
