In appreciation of Keppel Corporation’s support of their studies through scholarships, past and present students and friends of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) came together to perform an evening of French chamber music. The concerts were held in both Singapore and Hanoi, and performed by a multi-national ensemble from China, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam.
<p“Each of us came to music through various ways but what we have done and what we are doing now would not have been possible without Keppel’s kind support. Through our performances, we would like to convey our sincere gratitude to Keppel Corporation for their contribution to the cultural education in Singapore and Vietnam,” says Dang Viet Ha, Fourth Year violin student and Keppel Scholar at YSTCM.
The students charmed their audience, which included guests from Keppel, YSTCM Faculty members and the general public, with an evening of French chamber works including the famous The Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns.
Gifts, such as Keppel’s, have given students at the Conservatory the opportunity to learn from some of the most experienced teachers and world-renowned musicians, who help develop their talent and technical skills. The aim of the students, in turn, is to bring classical music to society through their performances.
Trinh Ha Linh, Third Year cello student and Keppel Scholar, added, “With Keppel’s Scholarship, we confidently study in a world-class environment with less financial worry. We realise that not all music students have this chance, and the concerts are a platform for us to utilise the knowledge and skills gained at the Conservatory. It is also a chance for us to contribute to the classical music scene and, at the same time, convey our appreciation towards Keppel.”
The Keppel Music Scholarship, established at YSTCM in August 2003, is one of Keppel’s many initiatives to engage the community. The Scholarship has funded the training of ten music scholars.
