Isetan Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Isetan (Singapore) Limited established in 1981, made a gift to the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School to set up an endowed scholarship for talented undergraduates. Through this Scholarship, the Foundation hopes to develop youth of high calibre into well-rounded adults who will go on to tackle business and societal issues in the real world.
Best known for its service excellence and commitment to quality, Isetan has branches all over Japan, Southeast Asia and China. In 1972, Isetan opened its first overseas store, Isetan Havelock, in Singapore at Apollo Hotel. This was followed by a second store in Liat Towers along Orchard Road seven years later, and subsequent outlets in strategic locations across the island, making Isetan a household name among Singaporeans.
Dedicated to its founding objectives of providing relief to human suffering, improving lives, and advancing education, the Foundation has supported numerous charities caring for the sick, aged and disadvantaged. It has also established scholarships in tertiary institutions to help bright young students achieve their dreams.
“We hope the gift will help alleviate the financial burden of a university education for talented individuals from less privileged backgrounds,” says Mr Toshifumi Hashizume, Managing Director of Isetan (Singapore) Limited and Governor of the Isetan Foundation.
While the gift from the Foundation will play a critical role in nurturing the brightest business undergraduates into dynamic leaders and captains of industry, Mr Hashizume’s wish for them is simple, “Use your talents to do good for the community.
Encouraging other corporate organisations to support education, Mr Hashizume has this to share, “Our hopes and future depend on the decisions and actions of people. If we want to solve our problems, it must begin with education.”
