Super Galvanising Pte Ltd, a leading provider of protection for steel-based projects, is the first donor to the Global Engineering Programme (GEP) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Engineering.
The Super Galvanising – Global Engineering Scholarship will be awarded to high-achieving students on the GEP, who are financially needy. The programme is designed to attract students who demonstrate a strong interest in engineering and have the passion to solve real world problems.
“The company’s philanthropic reach is extensive. But we come back to education time and time again because that is where the opportunity is, to nurture and develop young minds, and cultivate the next generation,” affirms Madam Lee Hwee Kwan, the Finance and Administrative Director of Super Galvanising Pte Ltd. Together with the Managing Director Mr Super Quah, they built the business over decades to become the success it is today.
Designed to attract the very best of engineering students, the GEP is an exclusive programme where students with exceptional potential can have access to an enhanced educational experience that incorporates a strong global learning aspect.
Mdm Lee acknowledges the need to attract more talented students to the field of engineering and, by stepping up to be the first donor to support this programme, she hopes many others will follow. The company has also supported the NUS Business School with a bursary.
Education is indeed a subject very close to Mdm Lee’s heart. She dotes on her staff as a school principal might on her students.
“I like to take a real interest in people’s lives and I start with those around me. Some time back, I noticed my gardener’s son working together with his father under the hot sun. To see a young man of age 17 to 18 willing to work in such a hot and sweaty environment so as to help his father is very rare. Moved by his filial piety, I approached the son, Jia Jie, and asked what his future plans are and if he was interested in going for further studies. The young man replied that he was interested to further his studies but their financial status did not allow him to do so. Confident that this young man was worthy of nurturing, I decided to sponsor him for his course. He did not disappoint me and went on to obtain his Diploma in Landscape Management. I always believe that if you are willing to work hard, you will eventually be recognised. And that is how it is with this young man,” the affable Mdm Lee shares.
Mdm Lee’s personal brand of philanthropy extends to her staff’s children, regardless of whether they are local or foreign, who will receive cash awards if they achieve good grades in school. This is to encourage them to put in their best effort to learn and to study.
The company also partners the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) in its On-The-Job Training programme by hiring ITE students who are studying part-time. In order to provide an ideal environment to help these youths assimilate into the corporate world and society, she sends her staff for training on mentoring and counselling.
The mother of two reveals, “It is definitely not easy dealing with these young students. They come from varying backgrounds and have different attitudes towards life. We want to inspire them to build character and patience and also instill in them the value of hard work to help them succeed.”
To Mdm Lee, knowledge has no social boundaries and philanthropy is more about relationships than money.
“We want the recipients to know that we care about them and we sincerely hope that apart from the knowledge that they gain in the classroom, they learn valuable life lessons such as passion for what they do, resilience and perseverance. More importantly, they should learn to be an honest, responsible and caring person who cares about society and the people around them,” she says.
“We are not very highly educated but we have a very positive outlook on life. So through sheer hard work and determination, we have achieved the little success that we have today. If the Scholarship recipients have a similar outlook on life, their knowledge, coupled with hard work and determination, will gain them unlimited success,” she adds.
