“I was always under the impression that fundraising is a challenging task. However, we were pleasantly surprised that our peers were more than willing to contribute! Many of them saw the importance of raising funds for scholarships and bursaries and donated more than the S$20.15 which we originally asked for without much persuasion,” shares Nicholas Lim (’15), National University of Singapore (NUS) Commencement Class Giving champion from the School of Design and Environment (SDE).
At the recent NUS Annual Giving Appreciation Night, a group of SDE Commencement Class Giving champions were awarded certificates for their efforts in rallying the Faculty to give towards University-wide bursaries and scholarships. In addition, SDE received the Volunteer Excellence Award and Best Participation Award for the Faculty between 400 and 1,000 graduating students.
Sharing their fundraising experience, the student champions were heartened by the support shown by their professors. “When our professors gave to this cause, it helped to encourage our peers to do the same. It was really heartwarming to see our professors being so supportive of this initiative,” expresses Foo Li Lian.
Besides being a class champion, Li Lian is a bursary recipient herself. She is thankful for her bursary which helped to lighten her family’s financial burden, and allowed her to take part in a myriad of activities at NUS and participate in the Student Exchange Programme. She shares, “I am deeply honoured to be given the opportunity to give back by making a small contribution to the cause and most importantly, rally my peers to do the same to benefit our juniors.”
During the prize ceremony at the appreciation dinner, Professor Florence Ling received the Volunteer Excellence Award and Best Participation Award on behalf of SDE. She is extremely proud of the SDE graduands. “Before they even received their first pay cheque, they have already contributed to NUS. I am proud of their spirit of gratefulness to NUS and hope that they will continue to engage the University in the future,” she says.
On SDE receiving two awards, the student champions enthused, “It goes to show that SDE students are a generous bunch! Winning never crossed our minds as we simply tried our best in raising funds. However, the awards really sweetened the whole experience.”
The Commencement Class Giving champions would like to thank each and every one of those who have given for their generosity. Every dollar contributed goes a long way in supporting their future juniors and will make a difference to the lives of others. They also hope that future batches of SDE students will continue with this spirit of giving, so as to create a caring environment in SDE in the years to come.
