The Faculty of Dentistry celebrated their 85th Anniversary with a Gala Dinner for staff, students and alumni to gather, reminiscence, celebrate the Faculty’s achievements, and give back to future generations of students. This was the crescendo of its 85th Anniversary celebrations, which included an Oral Health Screening and a combined 85th Anniversary Resilience Run in March, with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Science.
The event was graced by Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Education, as the Guest-of-Honour.
The Faculty also took the opportunity to celebrate the fifth-year anniversaries of classes present with a cake-cutting ceremony, and also honoured those who had made significant contributions to the Faculty. The NUS President and the Minister for Education presented medals, scholarships, teaching and service excellence and Long Service awards to deserving recipients.
The Faculty commissioned a renowned artist, Mr Ong Kim Seng, to paint two paintings of the College of Medicine Building, the birthplace of the Faculty that holds fond memories for many alumni and staff. The paintings were sold to the Class of ’85 and the Chairman of the NUS Board of Trustees and the NUS President, raising S$187,000 for the Faculty’s Development Fund. The Dean also read the letter of an anonymous donor who had pledged S$250,000 to the Faculty’s Endowment Fund. The grateful alumnus explained that the pledge is a form of gratitude and an encouragement to other alumni.
The theme of the 85th Anniversary celebration was “Building the Future of Dentistry”. It was developed for the anniversary celebration with an eye to the future development of the Faculty and the dental profession. Based on the excellent attendance and the funds raised, the theme had successfully inspired alumni, staff and friends of the Faculty and deeply etched the spirit of camaraderie amongst the dental fraternity.
