“I want to make others happy,” says Year 2 Nursing student Elisabeth Angelina. “This is why I chose to study Nursing.” But this desire to care for others would have been unfulfilled had it not been for the Fok Chu On Family Bursary, which Elisabeth has been receiving since her first year at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies.
Elisabeth says, “It would have been impossible for me to go to university if not for the Bursary. My parents would not have been able to afford the cost of tertiary education. Receiving the Bursary is a blessing because it has given me the chance to further my education in a field close to my heart, equipping me with the skills needed in a profession where it is one’s duty to help others on a daily basis.”
The Bursary covers Elisabeth’s tuition fees, the cost of her books and her daily expenses. It has also freed up her time to focus on her studies and to be actively involved in co-curricular activities and volunteer work. “Without the Bursary, I would have had to work, which would mean less time for my studies and community work. These activities are helping to shape me as a person and develop my interpersonal and leadership skills.”
In addition to her nursing studies, Elisabeth plays an active role in community life, both within and outside NUS. She is a member of various student groups, including the safety committee, an a cappella group, a choir and a drama group.
She also cleans the homes of the elderly and organises performances for them during cultural festivals.
Elisabeth is keen to specialise in wound care. Once she starts working, she plans to continue her volunteer work and take part in overseas missions to help people in less developed countries. “To be capable of helping people in areas with limited technology and basic medical equipment requires an even greater skill set. I am determined to constantly upgrade my level of competency as a nurse even after I graduate, so I am able to help as many people as possible.”
