Muhammad Shafarudin’s dream is to be a pilot or work in a large aviation company. But the Third Year Mechanical Engineering student was struggling to make his dream come true – until he received the Great Eastern Howe Yoon Chong Bursary.
Shafa, as he is called by friends and family, is the younger of two brothers. His father is the sole breadwinner in the family and was supporting Shafa’s university education. To help his father, Shafa used to tutor part-time. However, his father’s health started deteriorating, and the increasing medical bills put additional strain on the income.
Despite the financial challenge, Shafa was not willing to give up. He looked for some way in which he could continue studying, so he applied for the Great Eastern Howe Yoon Chong Bursary.
The Bursary was set up by Great Eastern in honour of its late chairman, Mr Howe Yoon Chong. The Bursary supports undergraduates facing financial difficulty from any Faculty.
Shafa says, “It has been of tremendous help. I can now afford transport and food expenses as well as study materials and school supplies. I don’t have to rely on my father.”
He also adds, “If not for this Bursary, I would have to take on part-time jobs to finance university. Finding the time and energy to study would have been hard.”
For Shafa, the skies seem within reach.
