With both his parents depending on him financially, pursuing a full-time Master’s degree seemed an impossible dream for community-conscious Geography student Su Guojie. But thanks to the Lembaga Biasiswa Kenangan Maulud (LBKM) – Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society (THK) Social Service Bursary, targeted at students passionate about social service work, Guojie is a step closer to his dream of becoming a teacher.
“My father’s company folded and my mother is not working, so I have been supporting my parents by giving them a monthly allowance. The LBKM-THK Social Service Bursary has really given me the chance to pursue a higher education without having to worry about my family’s financial stability,” he says. Guojie, who completed his undergraduate studies in Geography at the National University of Singapore (NUS), says the Bursary significantly decreased the financial pressure he was under and convinced him he would have the resources to pursue a full-time Master’s degree.
His areas of interest include social and cultural geography, including esoteric cultures and the geography of religion and death. He was motivated to do a Master’s degree because he knew it would let him concentrate on research, which, he says, “opens up knowledge pathways and helps us gain a better understanding of the world we live in”. The Bursary also made the research methods he had hoped to adopt a reality, as he was able to purchase a camcorder and tripod for his interviews and fieldwork with the funds.
Guojie hopes to share his knowledge with other students when he becomes a teacher. He currently coordinates workshops that offer alternative ways of teaching traditional subjects to ignite the passion for learning in young children.
“Pursuing my Master’s degree at NUS in my favourite course has been extremely rewarding,” says Guojie. “As soon as I have the resources to do so, I would like to give back to the University and help students who are in a similar position and who are passionate about using their education to contribute to society.”
