Donors and beneficiaries recently gathered at the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Annual Giving Donor Appreciation Reception, held annually to thank donors who have supported the University’s Annual Giving (AG) campaign and for beneficiaries to share their stories. The campaign brings together the NUS community in support of various initiatives that enhance the educational experience of NUS students, with a primary focus on bursaries and scholarships.
Thanking donors for their unwavering support, Professor Tan Eng Chye, Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost, who hosted the event, said, “Bursaries lighten the financial strain of students in need, and give them peace of mind; beneficiaries are able to take on less part-time work and devote their time and energies to pursuing a holistic education and making the best of their time in university. Bursaries also help to lessen the debt burdens of our neediest students, so that upon graduation, they are able to contribute immediately to the well-being of their families.”
In 2012, over 10, 600 donors gave to the AG Campaign, enabling some 2,400 bursaries to be awarded to needy students University-wide.
AG donor Ms Koh Mui Keng (’74), who attended the Reception, said, “I received financial support during my university days and know how hard it can be for some of these students. I feel that when you have already reached this point in life, why not give? Many of these students need our help, and so I think it is important to give.”
Sitti Maryam Bte Salleh, an only child who comes from a single-parent family, is one of the many students who has benefited from AG donor support. Now a Year 4 student at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, she says, “The bursary has helped to lighten my family’s financial load, enabling me to focus on my studies without having to worry about school expenses. Without the bursary, I might have had to get part-time jobs, which would have been time consuming and affected my studies.”
During the Reception, beneficiaries shared their stories with donors. The event also featured a short video of students sharing what an NUS education means to them and how AG donor support has enabled them to pursue their dreams and achieve their potential.
