“Receiving a bursary made a huge difference to my life, and it was only natural for me to want to help my juniors who might be in the same situation,” says Premesha Motha, Commencement Class Champion from the Faculty of Engineering. As a Champion, Premesha led her peers in raising funds, through the Annual Giving campaign, for their juniors.
She says, “Being a Commencement Class Champion gives you the opportunity to touch the lives of the future of our country and community, and this is in our own way a contribution to society for a better tomorrow.” Premesha is no stranger to the generosity of others, having received the NUS Bursary, which is partially supported by the Annual Giving programme. The Annual Giving programme is funded by gifts from alumni, staff, faculty and friends of the University
She was inspired to become a Commencement Class Champion after realising that many of her juniors faced financial difficulties like her, and she says, “I know there are many students out there with financial difficulties and I wanted to help raise funds for them. It was a nice feeling to be able to do something good for my juniors, most of whom have very real challenges when it comes to funding their education.”
Relating her experiences as a Champion, she says she found her classmates very supportive of the idea of making a gift, especially when they were encouraged to do so within their own capacity and after they found out more about how their gift would help their juniors. She adds, “My education at NUS gave me many opportunities to grow and to challenge boundaries and develop my leadership capabilities. The NUS Bursary made a lot of this possible so I feel it is my duty to give back and help others.”
Premesha, who majored in Civil Engineering, will be graduating this year, and has taken a step into the working world as a corporate sales executive at a business intelligence providing firm.
The Commencement Class campaign is a yearly appeal to graduating students to lend a helping hand to their juniors by making a gift. Gifts made to the campaign go towards funding bursaries, scholarships or student development activities. More information on this can be found here and students can volunteer to be a Champion for their Faculty or Hall by writing to the NUS Annual Giving Team at email@example.com.
