Qinyu Goh, a fourth-year National University of Singapore (NUS) Real Estate student, was a recipient of the Building and Estate Management Alumni (BEMA) Bursary.
Her mother has been struggling with poor health since an accident in 2006, and things took a sharp turn for the worse in 2016. Financials were tight, and fortunately for Qinyu, she was awarded the BEMA Bursary, which falls under the NUS Alumni Bursary Campaign, an alumni-led initiative to raise funds for student support such as bursaries and scholarships.
“Had it not been for the BEMA Bursary, my mother would not have been able to make such a quick recovery. Thanks to the Bursary, I was able to relieve my father of the financial burden of my education, providing him with more money for my mother’s treatment as a result,” she says.
Qinyu has a message of thanks, on behalf of herself and other recipients of financial aid, for the selfless individuals who give to bursaries. “Dear donors, do you still remember the very moment when you decided to make a gift? Please know that that was the same moment that helped changed our lives forever. I believe I speak for all recipients of the financial aid programmes when I say that we can never fully express in words just how grateful we are to have that lifeline extended to us, at a period in our lives when things might have seemed bleak and uncertain.”
She too plans to complete the circle of giving by making her own gift in the future. “You inspire us, and I, for one would like to pay it forward in the future by being part of the wider alumni community that contributes to bursaries like this upon my graduation. As Winston Churchill once said, ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.’ ”
