Although only in his second year of study, National University of Singapore (NUS) student Yeo Kim Yeong is already the proud owner of PannaCuppa, his own company specialising in making and selling panna cotta, the Italian dessert.
The history major, who had always aspired to be an entrepreneur, shares that he was inspired to start up PannaCuppa with his business partner as they wanted to create something from scratch – something that they could call their own that would have the potential to change the world and make a difference in people’s lives.
Having found success in PannaCuppa, Kim Yeong hopes to give a portion of what he earns back to society. He says, “My entrepreneurial journey has been a long and hard one and I know that there are others out there who are experiencing similar difficulties. The acts of kindness I have received have taught me to never, ever reject anyone, no matter how great your stature or how small the other person may be.”
And so, for every cup of panna cotta he sells at his push cart stall at NUS’ Yusof Ishak House, Kim Yeong has decided to donate 50 cents towards Annual Giving bursaries to help financially disadvantaged students.
Kim Yeong says, “I give because I believe in the power of potential. I share many foundational similarities with these students. They have a burning desire to succeed in their studies but simply lack the opportunity to do so because of financial issues. Similarly, I had the desire and passion to succeed in my entrepreneurial journey but the lack of capital caused my dreams to stagnate for some time.
“NUS has churned out many distinguished individuals who have made and continue to make an impact on others’ lives. If my contribution aids such a cause, then it will be completely worth it. Furthermore, NUS is my school, and it was also both my parents’ school. I feel a sense of belonging and history with the University, and thus it only feels natural for me to give back to it.”
